privilege

2021. 12”x36”. Wool, kozo paper; wet felted.

PRIVILEGE was created in response to an exercise which simulated a race.  Each contestant lined up at the starting line, and then was told to take steps forward or back depending on certain criteria – whether their nuclear family was intact, their parents were educated, their family qualified for free lunch at school, and such.  Once the systemic impact was applied to the contestants, the starting gun was shot.  Each runner still got to race towards the finish line of success, but it was clear that their starting positions had been influenced by privilege or the lack there-of.  In this country, that privilege often has to do with skin color.

PRIVILEGE is wet-felted using merino wool and layers of kozo paper.  The different layers of paper result in varying textures and opacity.
